PPP’s inglorious track record
By Asif Haroon Raja
PPP government was thrice booted out, once through a military coup in July 1977 after it had completed 5-year tenure and twice prematurely on grounds of inefficiency and corruption. In 1990, President Ghulam Ishaq performed the act and second time in 1996 President Farooq Leghari showed the door. It was hoped that the PPP leadership would have got reformed after two failures in the 1990s and after remaining in wilderness for 11 years. Hanging of populist and revered ZA Bhutto on 4 April 1979 and tragic murder of Benazir Bhutto on 27 December 2007 should have put fear of God in their hearts.
Alas! All such high hopes have proved elusive and one finds that there is not a slight change in their outlook and attitudes. Lust for power and pelf continue to attract them because of which they cannot desist from placing selfish interests before national interests. Morals, high principles, uprightness, truthfulness, regard for verbal or written pledges do not fit into their chemistry. Deceit and pretence, doubletalk, double-cross, double-dealing, deviance, falsehood and subterfuge are in their blood. Whatever they say they do not mean. They are a typical example of a hypocrite defined in our Holy Book and Haddith.
They are always keen to sup with crooks and unprincipled persons and even with enemies of Pakistan. Their conscience never pricks them when they get ready to barter away national interests to acquire power or remain in power. Authority is the ultimate they desire and seek for which they are prepared to go to any lengths. Each leading light whether man or woman is endowed with a gift of gab and misuses this quality to justify party leadership’s wrongdoings by indulging in endless arguments.
The ruses of ‘democracy’, ‘love for downtrodden masses’, ‘sacrifices rendered’, are often employed to score a point. They never explain under what circumstances and why Bhutto was hanged and why BB got murdered. They never say as to why Gen Ziaul Haq had to ultimately use the whip to put sense into incorrigible Jayalas and the criminals of Al-Zulfiqar. They do not explain as to why every President and PM hounded PPP leaders throughout the nineties and up to mid 2007 and most of them fled to safer shores. Those who stayed behind became part of king’s party and thus saved themselves from the net of accountability. They do not reflect as to why the militants choose to target PPP gatherings and none else.
Peeping into the past who doesn’t remember how ruthlessly BB-Zardari duo and their cronies bled the nation white during their two inglorious tenures. Who will ever believe their side of the story that they were innocent as lambs and their coffers got filled up from heavens. Why did BB runaway in 1999 and refused to come back despite repeated calls by her Jayalas and she kept their hopes alive by telling them that she was soon returning. During her self imposed exile of eight years, she led a life of royal princess in Dubai, London and New York. Despite that major portion of the looted wealth had got frozen; she still had plenty to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. She had enough money to pay to the legal team she had hired to keep all her cases in Pakistan and foreign courts pending for years and the media team engaged to deny each charge made against her and to keep the party running through remote control.
Do we not know that BB had extended a hand of friendship to Musharraf on the very night on which he had staged a coup and axed a democratic government? From that day onwards she kept extending olive branch to him but he shunned her reconciliatory moves saying that PPP minus her was acceptable to him. That was of course not acceptable to her but she kept up with her efforts to woo him. Why did she have to accept the crutches provided by USA and UK to obtain pardon from the military dictator whom she outwardly despised? Having got her sins as well as that of her husband and her close acquaintances cleared through despicable NRO she claimed that she was the victim of political vendetta and propaganda.
If she and her acquaintances were innocent why did they not follow the legal path and let the courts prove their innocence or otherwise. How will the scandals of Surrey Palace, diamond necklace, palatial houses abroad, dozens of shady off-shore companies created to siphon ill-gotten over $ 3 billion to foreign banks, drugs case and murder case of Murtaza Bhutto will wash off from the minds of the people? We also recall how the PPP leaders took advantage of the lawyers’ movement to activate their disheartened Jayalas suffering from inertia. Having achieved their purpose Justice Iftikhar and the lawyers have been ditched.
Going a little back into history, we will recall that her father ZA Bhutto had supported Gen Yahya and not Sheikh Mujib just because the latter was not prepared to share power with him. Bhutto’s words which he uttered on 26 March 1971 soon after the military operation in Dacca still echo in our minds. He had stated ‘Thank God Pakistan has been saved’. His short-sighted statement proved false and within seven months Pakistan got dismembered. None can deny that he had a hand in the dissection of Pakistan. Have we also forgotten that he had become more autocratic than Ayub Khan and Yahya Khan once he took over? Did he not sack Gen Gul Hassan within three months of his taking over as army chief who had played a pivotal role in forcing Yahya to resign and had invited Bhutto to return from Washington and hold the reins of power?
The 1973 Constitution which he formulated was first mutilated by him to become all powerful.. He dissolved Baluchistan and Frontier Ministries and waged a military operation against the Marris and Mengals for four years and insurgency would have continued had he not been removed. Don’t we remember that all the political parties had ganged up under the umbrella of PNA and they bayed for his blood? Had Bhutto not imposed mini-martial law in three major cities to save his throne? When he was sinking he tried to expose white elephants (Americans) but then it was too late.
How can we forget that return of BB to power in 1988 was made possible by Americans? This favour was extended to her so that she could roll back our nuclear program. She failed to honour her commitment because of hurdles created in her way by Presidency, Army and ISI. Once she was sacked and was living in London, in one of her interviews to the BBC correspondent she revealed that she had provided the list of Sikh separatist leaders to Rajiv Gandhi, her Oxford friend. It had resulted in the decimation of Khalistan movement. Who doesn’t know that she earned the name of ‘security risk’ because of her hobnobbing with India? The couple had indulged in such massive plunder that her husband earned the name of ‘Mr 10%’. They went to such extents that even her handpicked PPP loyalist President Leghari could not refrain from sacking her.
While everyone genuinely grieves over the murder of BB, if one goes over the events dispassionately, would it be too incorrect to say that she asked for it. Why she had to make compromises and earn the animosity of extremist forces before her arrival? Why did she not delay her departure when she was advised by many of his well wishers not to go? Her return was being viewed by many of her detractors as a disaster for Pakistan because of her track record and closeness with USA. She had a very narrow escape on 18 October and still she didn’t consider it prudent to curtail her political activities. Why did she pop her head out of the sunroof, or is it true that Zardari told her daughter to tell her on cell-phone to do so? The big question is that who has benefited the most after her death? Why so much of keenness for UN to investigate her murder when all levers of power are in the hands of PPP? Is it a ploy to put the matter in cold storage and if so, why?
Musharraf made number of serious mistakes but sanctification of National Reconciliation Ordinance by him was his worst act. Pakistan was legally handed over to the blood sucking vultures to loot and plunder with abandon and to indulge in target killings, kidnappings and extortion without any fear of reprisals from law enforcers. After taking over power, the PPP led by regime maintained close links with Musharraf but never admitted it. It remained insincere about judges’ issue but pretended otherwise.
Neither BB nor Zardari ever wished to restore judges but kept playing monkey tricks to befool the people and simpleton Nawaz. Using his forked tongue Zardari kept promising that judges would be restored but also continued to devise ways and means how not to reinstate them. Flimsy and unconvincing excuses were made to confuse the simple issue. To make matters worse, 82-point infamous constitutional package was framed and several formulas were floated all in a bid to scuttle the issue. At the same time drama of removing the president through impeachment was played.
Zardari repeatedly backtracked on his commitments on judges without any compunction which finally led to the breakup of coalition. To top it all, PPP leaders strained their lungs to put the blame on Nawaz. They argued that his single point agenda and his inflexibility led to break up of coalition. Although never short of long and dreary arguments to justify the wrongs of their party leader, their lack of sincerity due to selfish interests and their compulsions due to NRO and US dictates made their stance unconvincing.
All sorts of pressures were exerted on the lawyers and the deposed judges to create cleavages in their ranks and to sabotage lawyer movement. He got rid of Musharraf with the help of his benefactors but enacted the drama of impeachment to befool Nawaz. Zardari got himself elected as President on 6 September irrespective of the fact that he didn’t meet the criteria laid down in the constitution and had been tagged as a national villain because of his habit of disowning public commitments.
Having captured the chair of presidency, he has got himself indemnified from getting prosecuted by any court of law. He has also taken control of all levers of power to not only allow his team to plunder without any fear of accountability but also to be able to give access to USA in areas where it had so far been denied. Having stubbornly maintained that the judges could not be restored through a resolution or executive order, most of the deposed judges have been restored through a simple notification after making them agree to retake fresh oath so that 3 November acts could be legitimised. He has no intention to restore Justice Iftikhar or to put former president Musharraf on trial. Instead he is keen to pardon all his sins and give him a safe exit since their common mentors’ desire so.
Why is Zardari playing into the hands of USA well-knowing their track record? Does he not know that there is a common belief that Americans had a hand in making a horrible example of ZA Bhutto? CIA is suspected of having a role in the murder of BB. Did America not ditch all our military dictators after its interest were served? Musharraf was darling of the west and USA and yet none came to his rescue.
How is Zardari so sure that Americans would save him once the wrath of the people fall on him? They have already given a hint by getting two scandalous stories of his linkage with Zalmay Khalilzad and his mental disorder in NY Times and FY Times. US drones are repeatedly violating Pakistan’s ground and air space and killing innocent people in FATA despite giving assurances that they would respect its sovereignty. USA has given a free hand to RAW and CIA to destabilise Pakistan and its clandestine activities are no more secret. Having given all the goodies to its strategic partner, USA has given a raw deal to Pakistan despite the latter having staked its security to serve US interests.

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was father of Islamic Bomb and moreover it was Benazir Bhutto who brought the Missile technology from Korea back in 1990. Shyam Bhatia, a journalist friend from her Oxford days writes in his book “Goodbye Shahzadi” : in an informal meeting with her in Dubai, she expressed over lunch, Shyam you know the Generals are on a spree propagating that I intended to roll back the nuclear programme back in 1988, they forget to mention it was my father who initiated the programme and that they used to come to me when i was PM. To tell me they didnt have missile technology and so we negotiated a deal with Korea to give us Missile technology.

There’s no comment here becuase this topic is already a threat against The Great Bhuttos..
If we take the history of Pakistan we will have many proof that Democratic Leaders survived alot for the Nation and they had given their lives for the sake of their Beloved country.. Starting from The First Prime Minister Of Islamic Republic Of Pakistan, Mr Liaqat Ali Khan killed by some Anti-Democratic or u can say enemies of Pakistan.. After Liaqat Khan, Bhutto Survived a Judicial Murder Murder by a Dictator who is very kind and Loving in the author of this Jibe Story.. After Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Nation of Pakistan survived 10 years Dictatorship and the poor people were killed, punished and kicked to the jail because they say the slogan ROTI,KAPRA,MAKAAN which my Brother denies that this slogan is nothing against Army Dictatorship, As the vision of this statement is clearly shown that Mr.Raja is very happy with his beloved Dictators..
Recently one and a half year back on 18th Oct 2007 after a long period of 9 years when Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto came back to her Homeland with a clear visionary to make Pakistan a heaven, The very first day when she was in the way to Bilawal House with a very huge crowd of 6 to 7 lac people which shows the sympathy of people from the whole Pakistan, The caravan was on its way very slowly.. After they crossed the Karsaz flyover a they survived a bomb blast in which hundreds of peoples lost their lives, thousands of people injured just because of the sympathy towards Bhutto’s, they know Only Bhutto’s can do for poor people as their party name shows their views Pakistan Peoples Party.. Coming back to the point Mohtarma got safed from that sucidal attack.. NOTE:THIS ALL WAS HAPPENING IN THE RULE OF A DICTATOR.
Some months later on 27th Dec Mohtarma was on the election campaign in the same city where the two Democratic Leaders meet to the Mighty Allah.. In a Election Campaigning Program at Liaqat Bagh She was Killed in a sucidal attack..
This is wat a dictator can do in his regime. The Difference is a Democratic Leaders always want safety of The Nation and the Nationals as Mr.Zardari recent President of Pakistan had given a best example to Fight against Terrorism and keep his Nation Safe.. The So called Terrorism by a Group AlQaeda was also created by a Dictator who had taken his best part in The Judicial Murder Of The Great Bhutto.. THIS WAS THE DIFFERENCE B/W A DICTATOR AND DEMOCRATIC LEADER..
The National Assets given by Bhutto are;
Following are some Examples:
Giving Pakistan an Honour of a Nuclear State.. Everyone knows how Bhutto contacted AQ.Khan and take him to his Country to make us the Nuclear Power.. As it is Briefed on the above comment by Mr.Usama..
Bhutto Contacted Russia to take interest in invesing their Money to Pakistan and give some Assets by which People will get jobs and will not survive from hunger and their needs..
Russia helps us in making Pakistan Steel Mills which had a great role in the Economy Of Pakistan.
If u think tat the above Assets are not good for Pakistan then what can i say to u more..
It is in record that Benazir Bhutto had given ROZGAAR(Jobs)and her first priority is for the poors and needies who suffered their lives in Small Villaged and Town.. She works for the better Foreign Policy as her Dad given his best efforts for a better foreign Policy and it is also on record that Pakistan was in very better position Economically/Financially in the Regimes of Bhutto’s.. After That Mr.Nawaz, Soon of a small factory own is now known as the Owner of Ittefaq Foundries, looted the Country by his famous project like Qarz Utaro Mulk Sanwaro,Motorway and National Highway and alot more.. and the all money looted was transfered to KSA.. Mr.Mushi had given a best example how to make a best running Country into a failed state by repeating the acts of Zia, making terrorism on its height, Stealing Wheat from the Country and sale it to foreign countries as Mr.Sahukat Aziz X-PM in his regime done.. Is that the way to run a Nation? Its a request to u to think positive who is responsible for the present situation in Pakistan.. Bhutto’s had done a great job for the betterment of Pakistan and The Pakistanis.. Thats y people remebered them till now and they will be remembered forever by their slogans from small kids to an oldies says Zinda hy Bhutto Zinda hy..
Talking about Judiciary matter i hav to say that Mr.Zardari had said many times that i will restore Judges and thats what he do as he Promised the Nation to do so.. Protest against Zardari in a way of Criticizm shows that something is FISHY.. Why Protests take place only on GT Roads??Some Activists groups which are banned by President are involved in that March, These Groups wanted Pakistan to be targetted by the troups of Talibanization. Why not in Sindh,Balochistan and The Pakhtoonkhua.. Pakhtoonkhuaw had suffered very bad situation almost 15 lac people were homeless in the Operation and now they are safely back to their homes.. But it shows that Zardari had done alot for IDP’s by giving each Family rupees 2 lac and ration for almost a year and ordered to construct their destroyed homes by the Operation.. As well as Balochistan suffered after the Bhugti’s Assasination, But they didnot involved in such personal wars by Activists of a single Province. It was Mr.Zardari who had fulfilled his all promises to the Nation, and InshAllah very soon after the Operation against terrorism he will look on the problems of the Youth who are un-employed.. Soon we will see the completion of the Slogan ROTI,KAPRA,MAKAAN InshAllah!
What else can he do to prove himself a Democratic Leader Of The Nation?? Its Very hard do understand Ideologies of such people like Mr.Raja..
Now look at this what he had done in the Power Generation Side:
Recently, a high-powered delegation from Iran headed by Engr. Parviz Fatah, the minister of energy, visited Pakistan on the invitation of Federal Minister of Water and Power, Raja Pervez Ashraf from December 29 -31, 2008. The delegation showed great interest to investing or making joint ventures in the energy water and power sectors. The Iranian delegation discussed/ met with different high officials of the government and visited different ministries and concerned places in order to explore all possible avenues to cooperate in the energy sectors. Both the countries have signed a joint declaration for further bilateral cooperation in the power sector. They also agreed to expedite the implementation of the ongoing projects. Pakistan and Iran agreed to establish a monitoring committee at ministerial level to fix a schedule for the completion of the ongoing and proposed projects, remove the impediments and to take remedial measures in this respect. It was also finalised that the transmission lines for import of 100mw would be completed by an Iranian company by the end of 2009. Furthermore, it was also agreed that while carrying out the feasibility study for the transmission lines, a provision for transmission of additional 1,000mw should also be accommodated.
Iranian deputy minister of energy, Abbas Aliabadi and managing director of PEPCO, Fazal Ahmed Khan were nominated as key people from their respective countries for implementation of the agreed and existing projects.
Main projects: both the countries were not satisfied with the slow pace of progress on two projects, namely the import of 100mw of power for the Gwadar Port construction of the transmission line and feasibility study for 1,000 mw transmission line between Quetta and Zahidan. The Iranian delegation made an offer that a gas based power plant of 1,000mw capacity near Zahidan could be made available for export of power to Pakistan in addition to the earlier agreed 1,000mw.

Accomodation to feed Poor Families:
Mr.Zadari had decided in the 1st Month when they got the PMship that they have to run a scheme for the poor and needy peoples who need the help of Government to feed themselves and their childrens.. He started that scheme in the Name Of Benazir Bhutto Income Support Program.. Many Families get the help from this scheme and now Govt. had involved UN in the same team to help needy people instead of wasting money or looting.. This is the thought of Zardari for the poor people..
* Issue of Benazir Bhutto’s Assasination: U said in your statement that why she pop her head outside the sun roof.. It was her love to the Nation that she used to wave in every Party Function or in her visit to villages or Cities.. These are called the AWAAMI LEADERS and this shows how much they had love for the people of Pakistan as compared to the Dictator or the SONS OF DICTATORS (THE GT ROAD LEADERS) who never open their Jeep windows in rallies and Long March’s, Is this the way a Awaami Leader do?? Awaami Leader dont have fear to give his/her life for the sake of his/her Country, Keep your concept clear on the Difference b/w Dictatorship and Democracy.. As u said that Bhutto’s never loved the masses and didnt work for them in their Regimes.. Well i had to say now, They didnt give their lives for themselves or their family.. They are Matryreds and why they killed is just because they want to serve the Nation and fight against terrorism for the Batterment of Pakistan, as everyone knows Establishment is always against PPP and The Leadership.. Now, Its Mr.Zardari who is fighting on the same Mission which Bhutto Sahab or Mohtarma Shaheed sacrificed in their Regimes..I wish Mr.Zardari to keep away himself from these threat against him, at one side he is suffering from the terrorism and on the other side there are some peoples who are trying to make fake propaganda against him which is the first priority of Establishment to get down the Democracy from the Govt. and if they failed in this then the had their second option which Bhutto Sahab And Mohtarma Survived..
The Answer of that call which u desribed above is.. As u said that Zardari called her daughter to say all that..How do u know?? U are a KhanSama of Zardari or u are trying to make Ruse against him to get his image down in the Eyes of Awaam?
Few days back in a PPP gathering Aseefa Bhutto Zardari in her speech said: “I like to thanks my Father President Asif Ali Zardari, for being by my mother side and for sacrificing 11 and a half year in prison for Bhutto Family and PPP, He is the Strongest Man i know and i praised him for becoming President and fighting for Pakistan, I praised my Father over steping up and becoming President and for continuing the 5 Year Democracy”. Just shut your mouth now and try making some other Propaganda.. As their is dignity left in people like us to defend Democratic Leaders from people like yu..
Shame on you.. At one side you are jabbering and on the other side you are giving the links from the Holly Quran and Hadith.. If u dont accept the Democracy its ok but u are making fun of Islam.. You have to fear for Allah instead of saying anyone else to fear from Allah..
The Will of Mohtarma BB was the originall will according to Mohtarma’s Childrens and The PPP CEC and Members. Who are you to proving the will wrong/fake?? Do u want her to give you the Chairman ship?? =) or you are sad why Zardari had taken a step to run PPP in a better way in such situation Created after Mohtarma BB.. His Slogan Pakistan Khappey saved Pakistan from a very big problem as there is a war type scenario created by the lovers and fans of Bhutto.. Zardari suffered alot for PPP and still working hard to
run this country on the thoughts of Quaid-E-Azam M.Ali Jinnah and The Great Bhuttos..
Wat else Mr.Raja?? Do u want Mr.Zardari to be killed?? Impossible, We are here to secure him, to keep him safe and to protect him from the threats and criticizm which can be seen in your statement easily.. No more Lives to be given now..
PAKISTAN ZINDABAD.. PAKISTAN PAYENDABAD..!
Best Regards..

After almost two decades of describing corruption as the reason for most of the third world’s problems, intellectuals in the west are beginning to question the wisdom of that argument. In a significant article in the Washington Post, Moises Naim wrote, “Today the war on corruption is undermining democracy, helping the wrong leaders get elected and distracting societies from facing urgent problems.” Mr. Naim, who is the editor of Foreign Policy argued that the obsession with eliminating corruption “crowds out the debate on other crucial problems.”
According to Naim, “Corruption has too easily become the universal diagnosis for a nation’s ills. If we could only curtail the culture of graft and greed, we are told, many other intractable problems would easily be solved. But although it is true that corruption can be crippling, putting an end to the bribes, kickbacks, and payoffs will not necessarily solve any of the deeper problems that afflict societies. In fact, this false belief can make it harder, if not impossible, to rally public support for other indispensable public efforts.”
Naim points out that flaws in a country’s educational system or healthcare and stagnating economies do not receive the same attention as corruption scandals. “These problems may be aggravated by corruption, but they are created by conditions that often have little to do with the behavior of dishonest government officials. Even when such social ills rise to the top of the national agenda, the fight against corruption tends to inform the public debate. Inevitably, the public’s understanding of what it would take to tackle other national priorities becomes clouded by the corruption obsession.”
The “worst collateral damage” of a fixation with corruption, according to Naim, “is the political instability it can create. Electorates already have many reasons to be disappointed with their elected officials. The corruption curse feeds people’s unrealistic expectations about what it would take to improve their standard of living and set a country on a more prosperous path. Popular impatience, exacerbated by the belief that nearly all those at the top are lining their pockets, unreasonably shortens the time governments have to produce results.”
Although Naim, who was born in Venezuela and once served as its Trade Minister, cites the example of Latin America where 11 governments fell because of corruption his arguments apply equally to Pakistan. Between 1988 and 1999 no elected civilian government was allowed to complete its term because of alleged corruption. The 1999 military coup that brought General Pervez Musharraf to power was also justified on grounds that Pakistan’s generals were better suited to wage the war against corruption.
As Moises Naim points out, “There is no doubt that corruption is a scourge. But there is also no doubt that many countries crippled by corruption are not sinking. Hungary, Italy and Poland are just a few examples of countries where prosperity has coexisted with significant levels of corruption. China, India and Thailand are not only not sinking; they are prospering, despite widespread corruption.” Of course, Naim’s purpose is not to condone corruption. He seeks only to point out that the elites and intelligentsias of some countries can ignore more fundamental problems while obsessing about corruption. Often, deviation from constitutional governance and frequent ouster of elected leaders still does not bring corruption to an end.
During the mid-1990s Pakistanis felt dishonored by the revelation that Transparency International had listed Pakistan as the second most corrupt country in the world. Apologists for Pakistan’s establishment used this factoid to run down Pakistan’s politicians and blamed them for bringing Pakistan to this point. Once the establishment had run the politicians down and used corruption as an excuse for increasing its power in a succession of palace coups, discussion over Pakistan’s rating for corruption by Transparency International has seldom made news. Hardly anyone has noticed, for example, that Pakistan’s rating for perceived corruption increased in 2004 over the 2003 rating. Had elected civilians been in office, the intelligence services would have ensured headlines highlighting the increase in corruption.
Transparency International is a Berlin-based organization that publishes an annual Corruption Perceptions Index based on surveys “from 13 independent institutions” based on “the opinions of business people and country analysts.” In the 2004 Transparency International index, Finland was identified as the world’s least corrupt country and the most corrupt countries were Bangladesh and Haiti. According to TI, “The index defines corruption as the abuse of public office for private gain, and measures the degree to which corruption is perceived to exist among a country’s public officials and politicians.”
The scores on TI’s index range from 10 (squeaky clean) to zero (highly corrupt). TI considers a score of 5.0 as “the borderline figure distinguishing countries that do and do not have a serious corruption problem.”
Pakistan’s rating in the 2003 survey was 2.5 and in 2004 it stood at 2.1. Pakistan was tied in 6th position as the most corrupt country in 2004 whereas it was in 11th position in 2003. The methodology for determining the level of corruption in a country is such that the ranking is less important than the rating. A country can be the worst in a certain year, when fewer nations are surveyed, but move up or down in the rankings because of changes in the number of countries surveyed. Pakistan’s rating, on the other hand, has improved little over the years.
In Pakistan’s case, corruption is a constant factor, which is exaggerated or downplayed according to the political needs of the country’s bureaucracy and generals. The Pakistani establishment uses corruption as an excuse to boot out or denigrate the politicians while covering up the corruption and other ethical lapses of military officers and civil servants. Look at the difference in attitude towards the Transparency International surveys from the 1990s to the present. Had Pakistan’s corruption rating gone up under a political government, we would never have heard the end of how corrupt Pakistan’s politicians are.
During the last few weeks stories have emerged of a military officer’s involvement in rape, a Federal Secretary being detained at Heathrow for sexual harassment and two Pakistani police officers serving as UN Peacekeepers in Haiti running a prostitution racket. Not long ago the Pakistani ambassador to the United Nations, a career Foreign Service officer, stood accused by New York police of domestic violence against a girl friend.
In case of the military officer accused of rape, the military’s spirit de corps required the army chief to declare him innocent before a judicial process. The Federal Secretary is under suspension but will most likely bounce back. The ambassador was provided the cover of diplomatic immunity long enough to make up with the woman in question and the matter was buried without even a slight blemish on his record for bad judgment. The story of the police officers who used their position as UN peacekeepers to make money as organizers of prostitution has hardly been told in Pakistan. If any of these cases had involved popular politicians, Pakistan’s anti-political establishment and its apologists would have used them to argue that the country’s political class has no ethics.
Honest Pakistanis must carry on their struggle against corruption but anti-corruption crusades have been used by the country’s establishment to deprive the country of democratic governance and popular participation in government. As Naim points out, the obsession with corruption is diverting attention from and preventing debate on many other issues that Pakistanis must address.

People who have deep sense of history regretfully remember July 5 (1977) as perhaps the darkest day for democracy in Pakistan’s history. How ironic it was that it followed the historic day (July 4) when the Americans as a proud nation more than two hundred years ago had heralded to the world that the noble concept of “we the people” as the sole arbiters of power and the main pillar on which rests the democratic edifice of civil society had come to stay. The idea had set ablaze the imagination of all-freedom loving people and given a new momentum to self-governance, a new meaning to human liberty and dignity, equality and fraternity and opened floodgates of global change.
However, in Pakistan just before the 4th of July celebrations ended in 1977 at the American Embassy in Islamabad, sheepishly walked out to his waiting four-starred limousine, Pakistan’s army chief General Ziaul Haq hand in hand with a young political counsellor Arnie Raphel. They were whispering to each other—perhaps the General was confining to him—scheme of things that were to unfold after the clock was to strike 12 at midnight. Many believe what Kermit Roosevelt was to Shah of Iran in the American coup of 1953 against Dr Mossadegh; Arnold Raphel was to General Ziaul Haq in the dismissal of Pakistan’s only popularly elected prime minister martyred Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
Arnold’s importance and closeness could be judged from the fact that once Zia and his generals had put into action Washington’s Jihad against Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, he was despatched to Islamabad as one of the youngest American ambassadors, to be by the side of his friend –General Zee– to ensure constant supply of dollars and guns. And their affinity was so deep that even nature acknowledged it by putting them together on the ill-fated C-130. With them also went the vital secrets of the possible collaboration between the two for the ouster of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who had earlier been warned of a horrible fate if he did not dissuade himself from acquiring nuclear technology.
A walk through the pages of history of the two coups—one against Dr Mossadegh and the other being General Zia’s against ZAB, one would find many similarities in consequences—both equally devastating and lethal. Kermit Roosevelt as CIA’s in-charge of the Operation Ajax to oust Iran’s popular Prime Minister Dr Mossadegh to restore Shah on the throne and Anglo-American hold on Iranian oil, had poured unaccounted dollars into Iran to buy support from the army generals, street goons and thugs, politicians, mullas, journalists, traders and transporters. And after his initial failure, Kermit Roosevelt ultimately succeeded in Mossadegh’s removal, his life-long house arrest and restoration of the Shah to the throne to act thereafter, for quarter of a century, as American policeman in the region.
The immediate and short term objective of the coup was no doubt achieved. Iranian oil exploitation, authoritarian supremacy of the West in the region and minimising of the growing Soviet influence had been established. However, in the dispassionate assessment and evaluation of the of the long term achievement one would have to agree with the conclusions of the famous author Stephen Kinzer (All the Shah’s Men) and John Perkins, in his book:
“Confessions of An Economic Hit Man” that CIA’s coup against Dr Mossadegh who commanded overwhelming respect of his people sowed the seeds for a fundamentalist Islamic movement, served fodder for the Khomeini Revolution and ignited an inextinguishable fire of anti-Americanism in Middle East and elsewhere as manifested in the rise of Islamic militancy and global terrorism. While Kermit Roosevelt succeeded in bringing down until his removal, the most popular Iranian political leader by winning people over through payoffs and threats, enlisting them to organize a series of street riots and violent demonstrations, which created the impression that Mossadegh, was both unpopular and inept.
By abandoning President Truman’s realistic and just policy on Iran and falling a victim to CIA, State Department and mostly the British Foreign Office’s disinformation as well as sexed up dossiers, President Eisenhower had, by approving Dulles brothers coup plot to oust Dr Mossadegh dubbed wrongly as rabid communist when he was a nationalist pure and simple, fighting the British imperialists for a fair price for Iranian oil, had committed the greatest US foreign policy blunders of the 20th Century.
Since the pro-Shah Iranian coup in 1953 Americans have only reaped a bitter harvest of genuine hatred of the Iranian people irrespective of their vocations. Besides that, that colossal blunder when looked in its correct perspective today has been the main factor for the rise of Islamic militancy when just before 1953 every Iranian household looked towards the United States as their friend. By removing a democratic Mossadegh and replacing him by a tyrant dictator, Washington had earned the permanent animosity of the masses.
In 1977 history of Iranian coup was repeated in Pakistan. ZAB’s policies somehow did not fit in the American global scheme of things. He wanted to create a strong Islamic bloc and convert their otherwise zero+zero=0 status into a position of respect. West saw in it a direct threat to Israel’s expansionist designs. He wanted to lead the Third World for a better economic deal and rightful place in the comity of nations dominated by the capitalist and communist camps. Domestically, he introduced a revolutionary reformist agenda that would have eliminated exploitation of man by man. He nationalised industries, financial and educational institutions to open floodgates of change for the greatest good of the largest number. His inerasable slogan of “roti, kapra and makkan” (bread, clothing and shelter) continues to hold sway over the imagination of the downtrodden masses even today as the key to a prosperous future in a federal Pakistan. They hopefully look forward to the return of his daughter former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto to be delivered of their continuing miseries. ZAB’s unleashing of the massive human energy through his populists policies was misconstrued by the Western capitalist interests. Like Dr Mossadegh his nationalistic commitment too was misunderstood. They took him to be a communist when he was not.
What irked them most was his nuclear policy. They failed to understand that it was purely based on catering to the deterrent and security needs of the country besides generating cheaper and cleaner energy for the galloping industrialisation of the country that he had undertaken to improve the purchasing power and quality of life of his poor people. Not doubt, the greater quantum of interest and speed in acquiring nuclear energy was essentially to protect and preserve Pakistan’s territorial integrity after it was dismembered by India in 1971 war. It is a considered view among the civilian and military analysts that had Pakistan acquired nuclear capability before 1971 it could have saved itself from foreign aggression.
However, his quest for nuclear capability to secure Pakistan’s territorial integrity from outside aggression was misunderstood. His remark that when the Christians have it, Hindus have it, Jews have it and the Communists have it—why not a Muslim country should have it—was wrongly given the colour that he was setting up a nuclear weapons manufacturing industry to export it to other Muslim countries. The fact, however, was contrary to the fiction blown into a mountain by all those who had arsenals full of nukes. Being a Muslim he was singled out for it and made a horrible example. And for that like CIA coup against Dr Mossadegh, Pakistani generals were used in cahoots with the mullas, political parties, media magnets, street goons, intellectuals, traders, shop-keepers, labourers etc. Dollars were pumped into the country in such a large number that for the first time ever in Pakistan they were available freely at the curb much less than rupee value. Labourers working at constructions sites found it more profitable to participate in political agitation in the streets. After putting in 12 hours of hard work, carrying bricks and mortar on their shoulders in temperatures touching 40 degree, they used to get Rs 15 while joining a political rally for just few hours a day they would earn Rs 50. And if they were arrested, they were assured sumptuous rations to be delivered by their political mentors at their door steps for as long as they were incarcerated.
The PNA movement of 1977 had started on the alleged grounds of rigging in the elections. Pakistan’s invisible rulers used it to further their own ends and to serve the master who wanted ZAB to b e made a horrible example. It exposed their sinister game in totality when the military moved in immediately after PNA and PPP leadership had come to terms for fresh elections. The message was intercepted “Party is over”, that is, General Zia’s coup was in order.
Much similar to Dr Mossadegh’s removal, the short term objective of removing ZAB was no doubt achieved but like Dr Mosadegh’s, ZAB ouster too had much similar consequences. It replaced popular democratic leadership with that of a ruthless Wahabi dictator who paved the way for Pakistan’s Talibanisation. General Zia was allowed to trample upon the democratic rights of the people by those very nations that profess democracy day and night in exchange of his mercenary role in Afghan Jihad.
Now too the situation is not much different. General Musharraf is having the cake and eating it too. It was under him and not under any civilian that Pakistan was discovered to be running a nuclear supermarket. He has been allowed to slam doors on popular political leadership not because Pakistani masses want it. His main source of strength is his mercenary institution and the man in Washington who changed the colour of his glasses in post-9-11 period to see in the pariah military dictator as his “best friend”—(and one would not be proud of that connotation if one knew who is considered as man’s best friend in the West).
By showing preference to a military dictator democratic west is making the same colossal blunder that President Eisenhower had made in 1953 by allowing a coup against a democratic leader in Iran. Under General Musharraf Taliban have established a state within the state in Waziristan region of Pakistan and Quetta has become their recruitment and training centre. Had they seen through his game of running with the American hare and hunting with the Taliban hounds and not acquiesced into his blackmail on the bogey of over blown Islamist peril and seen that democracy returns to Pakistan, they would have by now stability and working democracy in Afghanistan as well.
Time is running out fast. Today Taliban have established their writ in Waziristan, tomorrow they could run over the entire North West Frontier. Before that happens, let democracy return to Pakistan since it is the only viable approach to countering and eliminating terrorism. A little late would be too late and there would be no milk left to cry over.

I agreed with my brothers Mr Farhad & Usma but let me tell you something more…. Mr. Asif Haroon Raja as you criticezed here alot:
As farhad said its already a threat against The Great Bhuttos but Bhutto’s lover & suppouter are still alive to defand the ideology of Bhuttoism,,,,
Criticizing anyone is very easy but always make sure whatever you are going to say must be not a part of History…Cox History defines itself like as:
calling the Father of the Nuclear programme is none other than a Bhutto, who paid his life for this great national achivement…moved by another people’s beloved leader & her Daughter Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed again thtz was a Bhutto…
” We also recall how the PPP leaders took advantage of the lawyers’ movement to activate their disheartened suffering from inertia. Having achieved their purpose Justice Iftikhar and the lawyers have been ditched.” thtz really funny cux her party Jayalas nevever been disheartened ever neither they will, if you go back little bit more to the time, On 18 Oct 2007 she received a huge reception by her Jayalas with the number of Three Million…( showed her Jayalas love which can never need any kind of movement to activate )…& 18 oct comes first before she & her party took part in the protest for re-storing judges issue….. Again, ” Neither BB nor Zardari ever wished to restore judges.” lolz its again very funny cux :
thtz was BiBi Shaheed who took part herself in the protest of re-storing judges…
thatz Mr. Asif Ali Zardari who make it possible by the grace of ALLAH TALA…accept knowing tht, he is going to re-stor tht judge who never got time in last 11 and a half year to open his case file filled without any charge ever being proven against him.
” Why is Zardari playing into the hands of USA well-knowing their track record? Does he not know that there is a common belief that Americans had a hand in making a horrible example of ZA Bhutto? Mr. Asif Ali Zardari himself a part of Bhuttoism ( A fight without any fear for the sake of democracy ) & beliving as a true muslim tht: Life & Death in the Hands of ALLAH TALA which can never be denied as well as there is no one accept ALLAH TALA who protects the best from the killer one….so President Mr. Asif Ali Zardari never feared neither he will as reciving security threat….as here is a song for him, Tu Hi Mard-e-Hur Jaan baaz Hai Humein is liyey tujh per naaz hai jo chal pari sab se alag uchi teri vo parwaz hai…Jeay Asif Ali Zardari
” At the same time drama of removing the president through impeachment was played,” DRAMA??? let me tell you as PPP comes into power musharraf played a very dominant roleany, he just gave him 4 months to retire peacefully…which happened successfully by the grace of ALLAH TALA without any voilence…as we belive Democracy is the best Revange…we always praise to fight with peace….so try to understand the facts of peacefull politics or fighting against unjustice without any voilence instead of criticize him all the time.
